the blink of an eye

wideford

Lens cap dropped
on a black sodden path
beneath brown heather.

Does it retain?

The last image captured
of Wideford Cairn
in long-drawn sunlight.

I leave the cap
out blank, face-up
like a sky offering
to be taken
from a proud
but wither-fingered
old bush.

Sight abandoned
on an empty hillside
to the wind
and the wheatears.

Will they recall?

The eye that sought
and wondered at dead space.
