the Skara Brae storm

A midden of bones
and limpets brought
from a nearby place
now inundated. Was
that why you made this home?

Beds, dresser, hearth,
private shelves all house-proud clean
seen by hundreds
a day. Long sunny days
with rainbows in the breakers.

The wind casts loosely
sand out to sea
but the irresistible forces
of change return
with something heavier.

The old Atlantic grows
hungry. There is food
stored here. All along
Skaill Bay the strand
rises and dunes are swept.
